S& P 500 Futures (/ES) are trading slightly higher this morning as markets attempt to claw back some of last week’s steep losses. Overseas trading opened the week with continued pressure in both Asia and Europe. Japan’s Nikkei just slumped to a 2 month low after plummeting as much as 3% intra-day before closing down 2.5% as concerns over the liquidity in emerging markets continue to spiral global prices lower.
Gold Futures (/GC) are seeing some selling pressure this morning following last week’s sizable push higher as traders fled to the precious metal safe-haven. The 10 year Treasury continues to stabilize near 2.76% after breaking above 3% at the end of 2013.
This week will be packed with market-moving data with several key earnings releases from names like: Apple, Yahoo, Facebook, and Google all being watched closely for signs of revenue growth. President Obama’s state of the Union address tomorrow night will also be dissected for any clues to the government’s expectations for a recovering economy. This week’s main catalyst however; will likely be Wednesday’s Fed decision regarding the acceleration of the recent tapering program. Any missteps in communication could easily generate more panic selling.
